The Opportunity
The role of the Safeguarding (SG) Coordinator is to support the Emergency Response with safeguarding expertise and guidance, proactively work to reduce child and adult safeguarding risk, and respond robustly, effectively and in a child, survivor and rights based approach to any suspected violations.
Reporting to the Area Manager, but working with the each Function Leads and most importantly the SG Advisor for the response.The SG Coordinator will support the response team to identify and mitigate safeguarding risks to children and adults in the affected populations. He/she will ensure awareness, prevention, as well as safe and accessible reporting mechanisms are place. In addition the SG Coordinator will support the response team to respond to safeguarding risks and violations to programme participants and people in the affected populations , including (but not limited to) the risks of sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment by Save the Children staff, volunteers and other INGO workers and partners, and the risks of unsafe programming. There will be a substantial reactive element, as this role will manage the response to safeguarding violation reports and concerns, working closely with, and building the capacity of, the existing focal points and key staff among the national staff.
The Safeguarding Coordinator will work with functional leads to produce a plan to mitigate the key risks, likely to include building the capacity of rapidly recruited staff and new partners, identifying and ensuring integration with other programme sectors, ensuring that Safeguarding issues are raised and addressed in real-time, and work with MEAL to develop an effective child-friendly and inclusive reporting mechanism following the supervision of SG Advisor. He/she will ensure the plan is aligned with Save the Children's Safeguarding standard and minimum requirements and that any reported violations are recorded and responded to correctly, via Datix. This role will also work closely with the Media/Communication/content team members, to ensure full consent processes are followed. This will include supporting media/communication/content team to do risk assessments; brief visiting media and content gathers, feed into TORs and any other action required to adequately protect child participants and adults at risk. .
The SG Coordinator will provide regular updates on safeguarding and escalate any safeguarding issues to the SG Advisor and Area Manager. He/she will also input into key funding proposals to ensure that Safeguarding risk mitigations are in place, and activities appropriately resourced.
In order to be successful you will bring/have:
Essential:
- Experience of safeguarding in emergency , fragile state or development contexts, including experience of case management and investigations
- Excellent knowledge of Safeguarding policies and practice
- Safety & Security Training for Insecure contexts or recognised equivalent
- Strong safeguarding practitioner who can transfer skills to others
- Good team member skills, including the ability to be part of and organise, support, manage and develop a small team;
- Experience in designing and delivering training on Safeguarding, including , safer programming and strengthening the capacity of key stakeholders to prevent , detect and respond to Safeguarding issues and unsafe practice;
- Good understanding and experience of supporting child and adult survivors and putting mechanisms in place ensure they access the relevant support available locally and are listen too.
- Experience of working with partners and of using a participatory approach as well as of coordinating responses with a range of actors, including Government authorities, national/local organisations, NGOs, UN;
- Ability to achieve results and maintain consistent high standards of professional behaviour and achievement, including when working alone;
- Ability to manage stress, be flexible and accommodating in difficult and frustrating working circumstance;
- Fluency in written and spoken English;
- Commitment to and understanding of child rights, as well as of Save the Children's aims, values and principles.
Desirable
- Fluency in local language of emergency
- Good knowledge of and experience in using established inter-agency standards and guidelines in child protection, such as the Inter-agency Guiding Principles on Unaccompanied and Separated Children, IA Case Management Guidelines; ISAC PSEA Principles ; and others
- Budget development and financial monitoring skills;
- HEAT training
Position holder will be based in Gaziantep or Hatay, therefore legal right to work in Türkiye is necessary at the time of application.
