ABOUT BIG HEART
Big Heart Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in 2013 to fill gaps in the response to the ongoing conflict in both Syria and Iraq. Big Heart has been operational since June 2013 providing humanitarian aid to conflict affected populations including essential food and Non-Food Item (NFI), Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH), Livelihoods and Education services. We specialize in the delivery of targeted and transparent aid to highly vulnerable populations in the hardest to reach and correspondingly most underserved areas of northern Syria and northern Iraq. Big Heart plays a key role in leading the coordination of, and advocacy for, Syrian, Iraqi, and diaspora-led organizations responding to the crisis, and has recently launched programming in both Turkey and Iraq. MAIN OBJECTIVES OF POSITION
Big Heart has maintained steady growth since its inception in 2013, and aims to build the necessary internal systems and human capacity to support that growth. The Board of Directors and CEO seek a mission-focused, seasoned, strategic, and process-minded Director of Operations and Finance with experience scaling an organization, and developing a performance culture among a group of diverse, talented individuals. The DOF must be a leader capable of ensuring that Big Heart’s team delivers measurable, cost-effective results – rendering the organization’s vision a reality. Importantly, the successful DOF will have the skills, sensitivity, and personal confidence to tap into the power that each member of the team brings to the organization’s mission. While it is essential that the DOF brings efficient and effective systems to increase the productivity of the organization, is it also critical that Big Heart’s staff retain the creative spark that drives the Big Heart concept.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the CEO, the DOF will lead Operations and Finance, and will have the following responsibilities:
Working in partnership with the CEO and Director of Programs, create a strategic 2-year plan, and implement new processes and approaches to achieve it
Serve as operations leader of the organization, coordinating the annual operations plan and budget
Oversee the design and implementation of strategic and tactical planning, risk management, compliance, quality control, and legal affairs management
Lead the performance management process that measures and evaluates organization-wide progress against goals
Provide operations and finance staff with a strong day-to-day leadership presence; bridge national and regional operations and supporting an open-door policy among all staff
Develop an accounting system for quick access to financial information, enabling strategic budgeting
Analyze existing technology infrastructure and scope out the next level of IT and financial systems to support the growth of specific programs, and the organization overall
Lead by example to foster a culture of open communication between operations, program, and finance functions in order to ensure the overall alignment of organizational needs, and the development and management of funding opportunities
Develop a sound internal and external communications strategy to package and position the organization, ensuring clear messaging which is coherent and relevant for stakeholders
Lead and manage the organization’s operations and finance staff including: Operations, Finance, IT, Human Resources, Procurement, Communications
EXPECTED OUTPUTS
Working collaboratively with the CEO and senior managers the DOF will:
Produce and implement an Operational Dashboard for rapid monitoring of the organization
Cultivate the values of Big Heart within the organization
Instill a human capital development and coaching culture within Big Heart; upgrade human resources functions including: training, development, compensation and benefits, employee relations, performance evaluation and recruiting
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
As a prerequisite, the successful candidate must believe in the core values of Big Heart and be driven by the organization’s mission. The candidate should demonstrate a passion for breaking new ground to lead social change. Beyond that, we seek a candidate with proven experience in scaling a multi-site organization, and a demonstrated ability to both lead and build the capabilities of a driven, bright, and diverse team. Candidates who have had management experience in the private sector are strongly desired. Big Heart is an organization driven by the values of its people, so experience in managing a value-driven organization will be highly prized.

Capacity building: ability to effectively build organization and staff capacity, developing a top-notch workforce and processes to ensure the organization runs smoothly
Leadership and organization: exceptional capacity for managing and leading people; a team builder who has experience in scaling up organizations; ability to connect staff both on an individual level and in large groups; capacity to enforce workplace accountability; ability to develop and empower top-notch leaders from the bottom up, lead from the top down; ability to cultivate entrepreneurship; ability to learn strengths and weaknesses, cultivate environment for success
Action oriented: enjoys working hard, thrives on challenge, able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge; ability to overcome resistance to leadership, take unpopular stands when necessary
General management: thorough understanding of finance, systems, and HR; broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, marketing, risk management and mitigation, and crisis management
Solid educational background: undergraduate degree from a recognized university; advanced degree highly desired
