Media and Communications Lead
Based in Jerusalem
Fulltime contract for one year (with possibility of extension)

Around the world people are fighting for their right to a decent livelihood. Oxfam supports them in this by strengthening local organizations and campaigning for just policies. This role will lead Oxfam's media and communications work in the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel (OPTI) to support our wider advocacy and programme objectives. Our advocacy is both local and international because poverty and injustice are global problems and are related to unjust economic and political relationships.
Purpose of the job:
In collaboration with all Oxfam affiliates and partners, you will lead and coordinate all of Oxfam’s media and communication work related to OPTI.
The position holder reports to the Oxfam OPTI Policy Lead.
Main tasks
The Media and Communications Officer will support advocacy, development, and humanitarian programs by leading the Oxfam confederation’s media and communication work related to the Occupied Palestinian Territory and Israel. The office holder will coordinate closely with Oxfam’s Country Director for OPTI, Oxfam’s policy lead for OPTI, the Oxfam Country Leadership Team (CLT), the Chair of the Program Governance Group (PGG) for the Middle East and Maghreb (MEMAG) and other relevant Oxfam staff to:
- Lead the design and implementation of Oxfam's media and communications strategy for OPTI, in support of advocacy and programme objectives at national and global levels;
- Provide support, coordination and matrix management of the day-to-day work of other media/communications staff in OPTI;
- Steer and coordinate Oxfam's global media/communications staff on all work on OPTIWrite press releases, statements, situation updates, stories and other media/communications material for public use; edit and advise on programme communications material; manage and develop Oxfam's use of social media in OPTI; and coordinate sign off of all products in accordance with agreed procedures;
- Provide strategic advice to senior management and programme teams; and identify new media angles and opportunities;
- Identify and manage potential brand risks;
- Act as public spokesperson for Oxfam in OPTI; and manage media requests, relationships and contact databases;
- Manage Oxfam's media response to humanitarian crises;
- Support and build the capacity of Oxfam partners and staff to work effectively with the media and public engagement;
- Coordinate and collaborate with networks of other international and local agencies on developing and delivering media and communications work;
- Keep relevant Oxfam staff, internationally and in OPTI, updated on latest developments in the region;
- Monitor results and impact of Oxfam's media and communications work, and ensure effective information management.
Requirements
· University degree in relevant area;
· At least five years of work experience in the field of media and communication in development and/or humanitarian advocacy;
· Broad knowledge of relevant thematic areas (human rights/protection, livelihoods, conflict sensitivity, gender, lobby and advocacy, among others);
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
· Demonstrated ability or experience in finding new creative angles and approaches for traditional and new media;
· Ability to negotiate effectively among diverging viewpoints; understand political sensitivities of various parties in relation to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict;
· Demonstrated leadership skills and experience with coordinating various actors based in different places around the world;
· You work well in a team and have outstanding diplomatic, social and intercultural skills;
· Knowledge of the NGO sector is an asset; a natural networker with substantial experience of building relationships;
· You will be expected to regularly travel within Israel and the OPT, including Gaza on overnight and longer trips;
· Fluency in written and spoken English is essential; Arabic or Hebrew desirable.
We offer
We offer a competitive, fair and comprehensive pay and benefits package that is justifiable to our donors. The international classification for the contract is in scale 9 and the corresponding salary range lies between €2.933,- to €4.512,- euro gross a month, based on a 40 hour work week and relevant experience.
