Make Music Matter works in countries that have been deeply scarred by conflict, HIV/AIDS, and violence against women. Music has always helped people around the world to overcome hardship by providing comfort and consolation, and by helping them to directly address the most divisive issues facing their communities. Through our efforts, music also contributes to the prevention of violence and public health issues, and to raising awareness.

Project Summary:

Basmeh and Zeitooneh and Make Music Matter is looking for 1 psychologist ortherapist for its project “Healing in Harmony.” Working in tandem with a trained psychologist and music producer, participants write, record and professionally produce songs about their emotions and experiences. The process has a profound effect on both psychological healing and the restoration of a supportive, healing community. Our artists are advocates, publically disseminating their music through local radio broadcasts, social media, community concert, and CD distribution, reducing stigma.

Tasks:

  • Conduct therapeutic sessions with participants employing psychosocial and music therapy techniques
  • Participants include survivors of sexual violence in various stages of recovery, trauma survivors from conflict other vulnerable populations
  • Manage and guide participant’s artist repertoire along with local producer
  • Identify, organize and integrate results of psychological, medical, family, economic and social history of patients/participants in order to guide their recovery
  • Conduct and organize spiritual, cultural (interests and abilities) of patients/participants in order to guide their recovery
  • Identify already established coping skills of the patient/participant in order to guide their recovery
  • Organize two Workshops held with 30 participants to assess their needs and the appropriate application of music therapy
  • Organize radio broadcasts, community performances & advocacy events for testing
  • Test the dissemination of music and the associated messaging in communities through various channels (radio, music get-togethers & community concert) for various stakeholders
  • Document/disseminate findings of the testing phase
  • Identification and admission of participants
  • Organize group sessions for 75 participants in community aftercare
  • Ongoing participant monitoring conducted through the community center/questionnaires
  • Prepare participant surveys and questionnaires
  • Conduct community surveys and questionnaires
  • Ongoing monitoring of additional data/case studies
  • Publish studies and presentations
  • Organize exchanges with other practitioners

Indicators of Performance:

· Organizational

  • Satisfactory creation and maintenance of schedule of all applicable sessions

  • Satisfactory oversight of progress of participants

  • Satisfactory maintenance of institutional documents related to the program

· Programmatic

  • Satisfactory guidance of participants therapeutic process
  • Satisfactory execution of music therapy sessions

  • Satisfactory self-awareness of participants as emerging artists

  • Successful and continual integration of the monitoring and evaluation results from Emotional adjustment/stability and social functioning of participants including but not limited to: improvement of quality of life, anxiety and mood disorders such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression

Required Experience:

  • Min of 2 years experience as a practicing therapist or social psychologist
  • Empathetic and sensitive to groups with of varying background and experiences

  • Affinity for music

  • Affinity for popular culture

  • Ability to effectively establish a rapport with participants from different backgrounds and circumstances

  • Ability to deliver information to participants in simple language that will resonate

  • Ability to establish an environment of trust and open conversation
