Turkey: Numeracy advisor

Chemonics seeks a numeracy advisor to develop remedial numeracy materials for Grades 1 to 4 for the Idarah program. The numeracy advisory will create the materials based on early grade math assessment (EGMA) results and consultations with the Syrian Interim Government's Ministry of Education and provincial Education Directorates funded by Idarah. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.

Responsibilities include:

  • Work in close consultation with Idarah's technical education advisor, the Syrian quality education/learning program officer, and DFID
  • Transfer knowledge of best practices in augmenting basic numeracy to the Ministry of Education and to Education Directorates and their instructors based at the district-level education assemblies who coach Syrian school teachers
  • Ensure that numeracy materials are culturally appropriate, contextually relevant, and designed to complement and reinforce Idarah's remedial literacy, psychosocial programming, and capacity building efforts with the Education Directorates
  • Study the implementation of existing numeracy curriculum in Education Directorate-affiliated schools that use the Syrian Interim Government curriculum
  • Facilitate a consultative process with DFID and the Education Directorates (EDs) to design teacher training that specifically addresses results of the EGMA and known challenges in the Syrian operating environment. Idarah expects the training to focus on proven approaches to improving basic numeracy skills, interactive math, and how to conduct routine formative assessments. DFID will review and approve the training curriculum
  • Study the implementation of the numeracy curriculum using real time data to improve its relevance and impact. This can be done in a pilot, in which the consultant participates remotely in teacher training sessions; and provides feedback on lesson observations (video and paper based)
  • Analyze the results of formative data against the curriculum and lesson observations to identify areas for improvement
  • Coaches the relevant staff at the Education Directorates, Idarah and the selected NGO partner on how to provide training, support, and follow-up
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by the chief of party

Qualifications:

  • Education degree required
  • Experience developing and assessing numeracy curricula
  • Experience using EGMA data sets to design pedagogy that can be delivered in the Syrian context required
  • Field experience required; Middle East experience preferred
  • Demonstrated analytical ability and understanding of local and regional political context, with the ability to think creatively in conceptualizing teacher training and curriculum design
  • Strong organizational, management, and administrative skills
  • Minimum three years of experience in project design, teacher training and coaching, and development and management of donor-funded education projects, preferably in the Middle East
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Native Arabic speaking ability preferred
