Overview
Exciting senior level position for an experienced international humanitarian law (IHL) specialist to join Diakonia’s expanding global work on IHL.
Diakonia is currently in a dynamic expansion phase of its IHL work, with the programme developing on a global level.
What’s in it for me?
The position of Director/Senior Legal Expert will run and oversee the IHL work in the Israel/Palestine context, based in Jerusalem, and work closely with other IHL desks in other country contexts. The Centre has been running for over ten years. This job will include international travel and the opportunity to engage with IHL specialists locally and globally. For staff that excel with the IHL programme, there may be the opportunity to relocate to other IHL desks, such as ones currently in Sweden, Mali and Lebanon, and in the future Myanmar and Kenya (Somalia).
Main Responsibilities
The Director/Senior Legal Expert will manage a dynamic team of legal, policy, advocacy and programme management professionals. The Director/Senior Legal Expert will lead and oversee the IHLRC strategy*;* mentor staff; conduct strategic communication with stakeholders at a senior level; oversee production and implementation of annual work-plans; supervise legal research, legal reports; and publications and will oversee IHL/IHRL trainings.
Core qualifications required:
The desired profile of the Director/Senior Legal Expert is that of an experienced and dynamic international lawyer, with high level people skills, and management experience.
- Masters level law degree with specialisation in International Humanitarian Law, International Human Rights Law and/or International Criminal Law.
- At least seven years of combined legal, advocacy, and/or diplomatic experience. Experience working with an NGO an asset.
- Significant management experience.
- Expertise in strategy and programme development.
- Excellent communication and people skills.
- Solid understanding of the Israel-Palestinian conflict, including relevant legal matters.
- Exceptional proficiency in English. Knowledge of Arabic and Hebrew an asset.
Terms of employment
Full time position (37.5 hours per week) with fixed term contract- until 31st December 2019 with the possibility of extension.
