Established in 1951, IOM is a Related Organization of the United Nations, and as the leading

UN agency in the field of migration, works closely with governmental, intergovernmental and

non-governmental partners. IOM is dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all. It does so by providing services and advice to governments and migrants.

Context:

Under the direct supervision of the Chief of Mission (CoM) and in close coordination with the Head of Sub-Offices and Project Managers, the successful candidate will be responsible for reporting, managing media and the implementation of internal and external communications and other media-related activities for IOM in Ankara.

Core Functions / Responsibilities:

  1. Update and implement the public information strategy for IOM Turkey to prominently position the organization as a lead humanitarian agency with donors, partners, media agencies and the Turkish public.

  2. In close coordination with the Information Management Department for the Turkey Mission, and with the Senior Regional Media and Communications Officer in Vienna, and the Media and Communications Division in Headquarters (HQs), write, edit and produce timely public information material for IOM’s press briefing notes, global and country website, social media, newsletters and other media channels in clear and concise English.

  3. Advise IOM Chief of Mission, media focal points and other staff in the country on media, public information, event management, visibility, media and communication issues.

  4. Produce content in the form of human interest stories from the field, photographs and video clips for an international audience. Ensure collection of informed consent for all images and videos collected in the field using MCD’s Community Response mobile toolkit.

  5. Support the development and dissemination of appropriate communications and media resources for crisis-affected communities in the specific country context.

  6. Conduct field media enquiries and be available for interview on print, radio and television.

  7. Support global communications initiatives to engage public audiences including designated UN international days, IOM perception change campaigns and the Global Migration Film Festival, coinciding with International Migrants Day

  8. Provide internally coordinated guidance and talking points to colleagues in the mission and Headquarters (HQs) regarding on-going media requests and interview opportunities, when necessary.

  9. Ensure that there is appropriate gender awareness in all IOM communications.

  10. Develop and strengthen links with international and local media in the region to promote IOM’s work and reputation.

  11. Initiate and manage Media & Communications events designed to raise IOM’s visibility in the country. Assist Chief of Mission to represent IOM at events that contribute to IOM’s visibility.

  12. Liaise with media counterparts in governmental and non-governmental partner agencies. Participates in the national UN Communications Groups and relevant interagency media and communication working groups to encourage information flow across agencies and to develop complementary media strategies.

  13. Manage communications budgets for donor projects and identify priority areas to fulfill visibility requirements.

  14. Supervise Public Information Department staff and identify and fill department Human

Resources needs.

  1. Plan and strengthen management aspects of public information including human resources.

  2. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

Education

• Master’s degree in Journalism, Communications, International relations, Public Information or a related field from an accredited academic institution with five years of relevant professional experience; or

• University degree in the above fields with seven years of relevant professional experience.

Experience

• Experience in writing and editing in international Journalism and Public information;

• Demonstrated high competency as a writer and editor in English;

• Demonstrated photojournalism skills;

• Knowledge of graphic design, web, social media and video production;

• Familiarity with international organizations.

Languages

Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of Arabic and/or Turkish is an advantage.

Other:

Internationally recruited professional staff are required to be mobile.
