Organization Review:
Basmeh & Zeitooneh is part of the community it serves. Its employees are frequently also its beneficiaries. We are small and efficient. In 2014, just our second full year of operation, with a budget of $1.2 million we helped nearly 22,000 people throughout Lebanon, and prepared to expand our services to the Syrian refugee community in Turkey. Today we employ 110 refugees full time, while 165 women earn money producing textiles and other crafts in our workshop.
Project Summary:
The Peace Education is one of 12 programs Basmeh & Zeitooneh is implementing in its 5 community centers across Lebanon. Since its start, this program has undergone a continuous process of adaptation and development to cope with the refugees and hosting communities’ different needs. From “the peace and Tolerance camps” program funded by MEPI in the summer of 2013, to the “Peace Education” program funded by Adyan in 2014, Basmeh & Zeitooneh’s team was developing the program through the experience it was gaining from its daily contact with the refugees, and was able lately to add an important psycho-social aspect that helps the beneficiaries to deal with the stress they are going through as a result of their situation as refugees.
The suggested program will be implemented in 8 of Basmeh & Zeitooneh community centers: 5 in Lebanon (Shatila camp, Burj El-Barajneh camp, Bar Elias in Bekaa, Abu Samra and Qibbeh in Tripoli), 3 in Turkey (Gaziantep, Urfa) to reach 2.100 beneficiaries, whereas 25% of them are between 15 – 17 years old, and 75% are between 6-14 years old.
