Two exciting roles for experienced and passionate international legal specialists to join Diakonia’s expanding International Humanitarian Law Centre.

What’s in it for me?

Both positions provide an opportunity to work on international humanitarian law for an experienced IHL actor, working in a highly challenging and complex conflict environment. Both roles will include international travel and the opportunity to engage with IHL and human rights specialists locally and globally. For staff that excel within the Centre, there will opportunities to relocate to other IHL desks, such as ones currently in Mali and Lebanon, and in the future Myanmar and Kenya.

Main Responsibilities

The Manager will lead a dynamic team of legal, advocacy, and programming experts at the Diakonia International Humanitarian Law Centre, Jerusalem. The managers will oversee the management of the team, lead the strategic development of the desk, ensure compliance to internal standards, and will play a significant role in the management team of the IHL Centre as a whole.

The position of Senior Legal Advisor will be expected to conduct legal research, oversee and produce reports and briefs, deliver and support training sessions and presentations. In addition, the position will support the manager in high level representation and will be responsible for leading and ensuring quality and accuracy of all legal briefs and reports emanating from the legal advisors.

Core qualifications required:

The desired profile of both the Manager/Senior Legal Expert and Senior Legal Advisor is that of an individual with a specialised background and experience in international humanitarian law and human rights law, with high level people and communication skills.

  1. Degree in law (JD or LLM) with specialization and/or experience in international humanitarian law, international human rights law and international criminal law;
  2. Five to ten years of experience working in the field of human rights, humanitarian law, or international law;
  3. Experience working in one or multiple conflict affected environments;
  4. Excellent analytical, research, writing and editing skills;
  5. Ability to build strong relationships with key stakeholders, including diplomats, policy makers and state officials;
  6. Excellent communications skills, in particular in public speaking;
  7. Strong knowledge about the oPt and Israel context and specific legal issues subject to analysis;
  8. Outstanding level of English writing proficiency; command of Arabic and/or Hebrew advantageous;
  9. Ability to work flexible hours in a fast-paced work environment and willingness to travel;
  10. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, flexibility and sense of humour.

The position of manager requires significant management experience. For the Manager/Senior Legal Expert the additional elements are expected:

  1. Three to five years of management experience;

  2. Demonstrated successful experience managing teams in a high paced and high-pressured environment;

  3. Familiarity with donor reporting and relations;

  4. Budget management experience.
