Background

The International Catholic Migration Commission (ICMC) is an internationally operating non‐ governmental organization that serves and protects uprooted people: refugees, internally displaced persons and migrants, regardless of faith, race, ethnicity or nationality. Having its headquarters based in Geneva, ICMC has liaison and field offices across the world, including ICMC Europe in Brussels, and the ICMC Resettlement Support Centre for Turkey and the Middle East in Istanbul.

Working closely with grassroots, regional and international civil society partners worldwide, ICMC has acted since 2011 as global coordinator of civil society’s engagement in the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD). Since 2014, ICMC has also been coordinating the Migration and Development Civil Society Network(MADE), which is an open networking space for civil societythat has evolved out of years of civil society organizing within and around the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD).

ICMC and its partners strive to bring migrants’ and civil society’s voice and impact to bear on government policies and the multilateral agenda around migration and development, ultimately to improve the well-being and protection of the world’s 232 million migrants, their families, and societies in countries of origin, transit, residence and return.

GFMD Civil Society programme 2015: 12-14 October, Turkey, Istanbul

The 2015 GFMD Civil Society Days will take place in Istanbul, Turkey on 12-13 October, just prior to the Common Space between governments and civil society on 14 October, and the Government Days taking place 15-16 October. The 2015 GFMD Civil Society Days (CSD) will bring together about 300 migrant and civil society leaders from all over the world, together with observers from governments and international organizations.

The programme will be held in English, French and Spanish and will feature a mix of plenary and break-out sessions around issues such as labour migration, decent work and reforming migrant labour recruitment, placement and employment practices; migrant and diaspora empowerment and action; and the protection of migrants – men, women and children – on the move, in transit and at borders.

Scope of work and key responsibilities

In direct assistance to ICMCs Coordinating Office based in Brussels, the Logistics and Events Organizer will help with the organization and administration for the Global Forum on Migration and Development Civil Society Days (GFMD CSD) 2015, taking place from 12 – 14 October in Istanbul, Turkey. The Logistics and Events Organizer shall be responsible for the following main tasks:

  • Coordination with the conference venue, Lütfi Kırdar – Istanbul Convention and Exhibition Centre on required meeting rooms, space and facilitates
  • Rental of conference equipment, including audio-visual equipment and translation equipment
  • Recruitment and training of volunteers for and prior to the GFMD CSD
  • Assistance in hotel bookings
  • Assistance with event-related services and contracts, including local print shops
  • Selecting catering
  • Assistance with local transport for participants
  • Advice on selection of interpreters
  • Organization of a cultural evening
  • Assist in preparing a final activity report to be submitted to funders
  • Any other activities to ensure a successful GFMD CSD and related activities

Required skills and experience:

Education

· University degree in a relevant subject (or equivalent)

Experience and skills

· 2 years of proven experience in event or conference organisation

· Superior organisational skills and attention to detail

· Experience of working with international organisations / international civil society

· Problem solving skills

· Good communication skills

Language

· Excellent spoken and written English

· Good communications skills in Turkish

· Working knowledge of Spanish and French an asset
