Communications Associate, East Jerusalem
BACKGROUND
The UNRWA communications division HQ acts as the executive for all Agency-wide communications. The division directs and is responsible for the entirety of UNRWA public relations at a global and regional level.
A confident writer and editor with real attention to detail, you will ensure that UNRWA printed and online publications are high-quality, relevant and on-brand. You must have an excellent understanding of what makes good copy, as well as a working knowledge of both print publishing and branding.
Description of Duties and Responsibilities
- Develop and implement overall US donor visibility plan;
- Coordinate and monitor US visibility work throughout UNRWA’s field offices;
- Research, write and edit all US-related visibility materials for the UNRWA website and other social media platforms, including press releases;
- Perform regular monitoring and evaluation of activities related to the UNRWA communications strategy and ongoing campaigns;
- Research, write and edit UNRWA printed materials, including brochures, fact sheets, maps, calendars, post cards, posters, etc. in collaboration with designers, UNRWA staff;
- Write and edit press releases and other written materials for the Agency’s external communications;
- Assist with design, layout and printing of all materials, either in-house or with a professional design company, as appropriate;
- Provide branding and editorial support to UNRWA staff, including at headquarters, representative offices and at field office level;
- Support the UNRWA social-media presence, act as backup web and social media content editor (shared task)
- Other shared tasks, as needed
Essential Qualifications and Experience
· A university degree (BA minimum) or equivalent work experience;
· Mother-tongue level written and spoken English;
· Excellent copy-editing skills and meticulous attention to detail;
· Extensive proven experience of writing for a range of audiences;
· Experience in producing publications from editing to print stage;
· Demonstrable knowledge of branding best practice;
· Strong all-round computer skills.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
- Adobe InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop
- Experience in monitoring and evaluation;
- Experience in maintaining websites and solid understanding of social media;
· Knowledge of Arabic and/or other official UN languages an asset.

- Strong organisational skills (ability to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks);
- Highly motivated, comfortable taking initiative and able to work with minimum supervision;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral;
- Proven ability to work in a multi-cultural setting;
- Displays good judgment to political and cultural sensitivities.
CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
- The position is for one year with a start date of 1 March 2016, extendable subject to initial three-month probationary period. Remuneration starts at a rate of US$ 3,300/month.
