Organization: Danish Refugee Council
Country: Turkey
Closing date: 16 Jul 2018

The Danish Refugee Council assists refugees and internally displaced persons across the globe: we provide emergency aid, fight for their rights, and strengthen their opportunity for a brighter future. We work in conflict-affected areas, along the displacement routes, and in the countries where refugees settle. In cooperation with local communities, we strive for responsible and sustainable solutions. We work toward successful integration and – whenever possible – for the fulfilment of the wish to return home.

The Danish Refugee Council was founded in Denmark in 1956, and has since grown to become an international humanitarian organization with more than 7,000 staff and 8,000 volunteers. Our vision is a dignified life for all displaced.

All of our efforts are based on our value compass: humanity, respect, independence and neutrality, participation, and honesty and transparency.

About the job

Turkey is currently host to refugees, primarily from Syria, and to a lesser extent asylum seekers and refugees from Afghanistan, Iraq and Iran as well as a significant number of asylum seekers and migrants. In recent years it has become an important departure point for people in mixed migration flows, reaching a peak of over one million people leaving from or passing through Turkey in 2015. Thus Turkey is a key transit site on the Eastern Mediterranean route and critical to understanding the complex flows of migrants and refugees through information, research and analysis ensuring better early warning of future movements as well as improving the protective environment of protracted-displacement affected and migrant populations in Turkey. Danish Refugee Council has established mixed migration projects in other locations such as the Horn of Africa/Yemen, West Africa and North Africa that provide a protection-based response and now seeks to extend this work in Turkey.

The mixed migration project focuses on data development, analysis, research and advocacy. It concentrates on the so-called “Eastern Mediterranean route” flows from Afghanistan, Iran and the Middle East through Turkey towards Europe. The Mixed Migration Specialist will support DRC Turkey’s office on a wide range of activities as part of its overall strategy and coordinate with the Mixed Migration Centre - Middle East & Eastern Mediterranean.

The Mixed Migration Centre (MMC) was established in February 2018. It brings together various existing regional initiatives – hosted or led by the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) – engaged in data collection, research, analysis and policy development on mixed migration issues into a new global network of mixed migration expertise.
