BACKGROUND
Diakonie Katastrophenhilfe (DKH) Regional Office (RO) West and Central Asia, located in Istanbul, Turkey, provides program support to DKH Project Offices and local partners in the region. It is DKH’s approach to implement Relief, Rehabilitation and Disaster Risk Reduction projects mainly through local Partner Organizations. The focus area of RO include in relation to the Syria crisis include: Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. The Regional Office is also on stand-by in case of need for partner support in acute emergencies in South and Southeast Asia.
The DKH RO team provides technical and other backstopping to all partner organizations within its area of responsibility. It also continuously aims at increasing and further strengthening relations with local partners on the ground and building their capacities. For this purpose, in addition to the ongoing relief and DRR projects, DKH RO has launched a partner-tailored regional Capacity Building program in 2014, targeting all strategic partners in West and Central Asia.
In order to help carry out its daily project work, DKH Regional Office West and Central Asia is now looking for a dedicated intern to support the Syria response projects, under the supervision of the Program Officer for Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Location: Istanbul with occasional travels to project locations
Period: 11 January 2016 – 30 June 2016 (Duration is a minimum of 4-6 months)
Working under the supervision of DKH RO PO for Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan, the intern will take an active role in the following tasks:
Support to project and grant management
- Support partners in the proposal and budget development process for proposals to donors, and review the quality of the proposals made by partners, ensuring on time and high quality submissions
- Assist with review of field reports (both narrative and financial)
- Assist in conducting daily communication and project follow up with project stakeholders, as assigned
- Support gathering and maintaining other project documentation
- Help identify capacity building needs of partners
- Support improvement in monitoring and evaluation techniques
Support monitoring visits
- Organize field visits for PO and other participants in visits (arrange agenda with partners and organize the logistics)
- Draft monitoring visit reports
Coordination and communication
- Monitor humanitarian developments in Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon
- Draft monthly reports
- Compilation of weekly sitreps for HQ
- Supporting coordination efforts with related stakeholders and the organization of events such as conferences, trainings and workshops
- As required, represent DKH at inter-agency coordination meetings
- Attending relevant meetings and preparing minutes
- Collect and compile communication materials for PR purposes – also in close collaboration with the Program Assistant

QUALIFICATION, EXPERTISE AND SKILLS
Essential
· Completed relevant Master degree i.e. Humanitarian Action or equivalent or one to two years of experience working for an NGO (preferably in the field) ;
· Understanding of project cycle management
· Clear communication, presentation style as well as good interpersonal skills are essential.
o Excellent written English skills and very good spoken English;
· Excellent computer skills and competency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
· Excellent organizational skills and ability to determine priorities and meet multiple deadlines;
· Detail-oriented with good multi-tasking abilities.
· Fast learner.
· Ability to think critically and analyze.
· Willingness to travel to the field.
· Good understanding of humanitarian principles
Desirable
· Strong budgeting skills using MS Word and Excel;
· Knowledge of donor regulations, procedures and requirements
· Previous experience working in the Middle East on humanitarian programs
WHAT WE CAN OFFER
This entry-level internship will act as a stepping-stone for individuals who want to enter into the humanitarian sector.
Tangible hands-on experience in a small team, working for an NGO on projects linked to one of the major humanitarian crisis worldwide with travel to focus countries.
A modest stipend covering lunch and part of travel expenses within Istanbul will be offered. Also, health and travel insurance, residence permit fees, and full compensation for field visits will be covered by the regional office. Due to limited resources, all costs related to the internship (i.e. travel to and from Istanbul, accommodation, passport, visa or living in Turkey) are to be carried by the intern.
